U.S. Virgin Islands — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announced today that he has nominated Acting Police Commissioner Mario Brooks to serve as the official Commissioner of the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD). The nomination was made during the Governor’s Weekly Press Briefing at Government House.
In his remarks, Governor Bryan lauded Commissioner Brooks for his exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment to public safety, and his ability to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the community.
“Commissioner Brooks has proven himself time and time again as not just a steady leader in times of crisis, but as someone who drives progress and innovation in policing,” Governor Bryan said. “He has earned the respect of his colleagues and the trust of the Virgin Islands community by delivering tangible results and strengthening the connection between law enforcement and the people we serve.”
A native of the Virgin Islands, Mario Brooks brings over 30 years of distinguished service in both law enforcement and the military. Throughout his career with the VIPD, Brooks has held key leadership roles, including Commander of the Criminal Intelligence Unit and the Special Response Team. His tenure has been marked by significant accomplishments, such as expanding the VIPD’s marine enforcement capabilities and launching the territory’s first drone program to enhance public safety operations.
In addition to his law enforcement career, Brooks serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Virgin Islands National Guard, providing continued service and leadership to the territory. His unique combination of civilian and military experience positions him to effectively address the diverse and complex challenges facing the Virgin Islands Police Department.
Following the Governor’s announcement, Commissioner Nominee Mario Brooks expressed his gratitude and shared his vision for the future of the department.
