November 8, 2024 – St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – The Virgin Islands Energy Office (VIEO) has announced exciting updates to the Virgin Islands Energy Storage (VIBES) program, aimed at enhancing energy resilience for residents across the territory. As of November 8, Virgin Islanders can apply for larger rebates and install bigger battery backup systems under this expanded initiative.
The VIBES program, which was originally launched in May 2024, now offers increased financial support to help homeowners and businesses prepare for power outages. The program, funded through the federal State Energy Program Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (SEPBIL) grant, has raised the maximum rebate from $4,000 to $6,000. This update allows residents to install more robust battery systems that can power essential appliances during outages, including refrigerators, water pumps, and other critical systems.
In addition to the increased rebate amount, the VIEO has expanded the program’s eligibility criteria. Battery systems with capacities up to 20 kWh are now eligible, allowing for larger, more efficient systems to be installed. Consumers can also purchase qualifying equipment from vendors outside of the U.S. Virgin Islands, though systems purchased from non-local suppliers will require additional technical assessments and must obtain an approved Electrical Final Certificate from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) before applying for the rebate.
The VIBES program is designed to encourage investments in energy storage solutions that automatically activate during power interruptions, helping to ensure uninterrupted power for essential needs. By expanding the program, the VIEO is aiming to increase participation and further strengthen the territory’s energy resilience.
To qualify for the VIBES rebate, applicants must meet the following criteria:
– Be a full-time resident of the U.S. Virgin Islands
– Own property in the territory
– Hold an active account with the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA)
– Install a battery backup system with a capacity between 3 kWh and 20 kWh
