Dear Editor,
As a proud Crucian, I want nothing more than to see our island thrive and prosper. However, the current state of our roads makes it increasingly difficult to hold onto that optimism. Driving through St. Croix has become an obstacle course, riddled with potholes, uneven surfaces, and seemingly endless roadwork. It’s not just inconvenient—it’s downright damaging.
Every journey, whether to work, school, or even the grocery store, feels like a battle against the roads. The wear and tear on our vehicles is unprecedented. Suspension systems, tires, and alignment don’t stand a chance. For many residents, these repairs are costly and unavoidable, further straining already tight budgets.
Adding to this frustration, Centerline Road was closed for an entire year to repair a bridge. This critical artery connects the island, and its closure disrupted lives and businesses alike. And just when we hoped for relief, Christiansted’s roads were dug up during the holiday season—the busiest times of year for local businesses. Many of these businesses still haven’t recovered from the financial blow, struggling to make up for lost revenue.
Beyond the financial toll, the situation is disheartening. We are forced to endure substandard infrastructure while being met with vague timelines for improvement. What’s worse, the safety of our roads is in question. Poorly marked detours and deep ditches pose significant risks to both drivers and pedestrians.
As residents, we deserve better. We pay our taxes, and it’s reasonable to expect safe and reliable infrastructure in return. The constant state of disrepair is not just a matter of inconvenience—it’s a matter of equity and quality of life.
I urge our leaders to prioritize road repairs with urgency and transparency. St. Croix deserves roads that reflect our resilience and pride, not ones that sap our energy and wallets.
M. Wallace
