Washington, D.C. – In honor of Veterans Day, Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett has reintroduced two crucial pieces of legislation. They are aimed at enhancing support for veterans in the U.S. Virgin Islands and across the nation.
The Hire-A-Hero Act of 2024 and the RECRUIT Act of 2024 are designed to address the challenges veterans face. They are the challenges when transitioning from military service to civilian life, particularly in employment.
“The U.S. Virgin Islands has one of the highest rates of military service in the nation. However, many of our returning veterans face significant difficulties as they reintegrate into civilian life and the workforce,” said Congresswoman Plaskett. “This is why I’ve reintroduced the Hire-A-Hero Act and the RECRUIT Act to provide our veterans with the support they deserve.”
The Hire-A-Hero Act of 2024 will establish a permanent Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) for small businesses that hire qualified veterans. It will also be for members of the National Guard and Ready Reserve. This initiative is designed to incentivize businesses to employ veterans. It will help to enhance opportunities for their successful reintegration into the workforce.
The RECRUIT Act of 2024 will provide a small business tax credit for the employment of National Guard and Reserve members. It will recognize the increased demands on these forces.
As the National Guard and Reserve play an essential role in both domestic and overseas missions, service members often face extended absences.. The main reason is due to training and deployments. It further creates challenges for employers. This legislation aims to reduce the burden on businesses and encourage the hiring of these highly skilled individuals.
“While we honor the service of our veterans on Veterans Day, we must also reaffirm our commitment to ensuring they have the necessary services and opportunities for success,” Congresswoman Plaskett continued. “We may never fully repay the debt we owe to our veterans, but it’s our duty to do everything we can to support them—whether it’s through employment, education, healthcare, or housing opportunities.”
Congresswoman Plaskett remains dedicated to working with her colleagues in Congress to secure the necessary resources for the Department of Veterans Affairs. The aim is to continue expanding opportunities for veterans in the U.S. Virgin Islands and across the nation.
