U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has declared Thursday, January 9, 2025, a local holiday in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This observance coincides with President Joseph R. Biden’s proclamation of a National Day of Mourning to honor the extraordinary life and legacy of former President James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr.
President Carter, the 39th President of the United States, recently passed away, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting humanity. As a leader, humanitarian, and advocate for peace and democracy, President Carter’s contributions have profoundly impacted the nation and the world.
“President Jimmy Carter embodied humility, courage, and boundless compassion,” said Governor Bryan. “His leadership extended beyond politics, serving as a reminder that true service to humanity transcends personal ambition. The Virgin Islands joins the nation in celebrating his remarkable life and the indelible mark he left on history.”
Governor Bryan issued an Executive Order declaring January 9, 2025, a local holiday to allow Virgin Islands residents an opportunity to reflect on and honor President Carter’s enduring contributions. This declaration aligns the territory with the National Day of Mourning, demonstrating solidarity with the broader United States in commemorating President Carter’s life.
The Governor also announced plans to travel out of the territory from January 8 to January 10 to attend the State Funeral for former President Carter at the invitation of President Biden. During Governor Bryan’s absence, Commissioner of Finance Kevin McCurdy will serve as Acting Governor, and Senate President Novelle E. Francis Jr. will act as Lieutenant Governor. Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach, Esq., will also be out of the territory during this period.
All government offices in the Virgin Islands will close on January 9, 2025, in observance of this local holiday.
President Carter, who served as the nation’s leader from 1977 to 1981, dedicated his post-presidency years to championing human rights, democracy, and global health initiatives through the Carter Center.
