In 1969 and 1970, the U.S. Virgin Islands became the site of a groundbreaking underwater research project known as Tektite 1and 2. Funded by NASA, the U.S. Navy, and General Electric, the Tektite program aimed to study human endurance and scientific operations in a submerged habitat—helping to pave the way for future space missions.
