Denmark Vesey, who was once sold in the Danish West Indies and likely born on St. Thomas, became a symbol of Black resistance and liberation, demonstrating the transatlantic connections between enslaved Africans fighting for freedom in the Caribbean and the United States. While he did not live in St. Thomas long, his early years there likely exposed him to the brutal realities of the transatlantic slave trade.
