Urla A Isaac is celebrating another year around the sun. This year, she will reach the ripe old age of 102. Each day, she spends her quiet days as a resident and is cared for by the nurturing staff of the Herbert Grigg Home for the Aged in St. Croix. Urla Isaac is a native Crucian born on December 8, 1922, in Frederiksted, St. Croix. She was the last member of the twelve-member graduating class of 1938 at St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Frederiksetd. Urla fondly recalls her classmates, such as our distinguished former Governor Alexander Farrelly, James Bennerson, and Veronica Milligan. She is also the only surviving member of her siblings, which include Clarice Armstrong Mulgrav and Clarence (Crabby) Armstrong.
Equipped with secretarial skills she received from St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Frederiksted, she immediately entered the workforce in New York City as a government employee. Urla sang praises about the quality training she received from the nuns. After spending her entire career working in New York City, she returned to St. Croix in retirement in 1975. Restless in retirement, she volunteered with the senior citizens at the defunct Aldersville of the Department of Human Services and the University of the Virgin Islands. Also, she was a member of church groups and community social organizations. She often cites her genes when asked what her magic to longevity is. Her mother, Mary Abramson, lived to be ninety-nine, her faith in God, living life to the fullest as an avid traveler, and blessed with cheerful friends and loving family members.
