U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. issued the following statement on Monday, reflecting on the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter:
“It is with profound sadness that I join the nation and the world in mourning the loss of former President Jimmy Carter, a leader whose remarkable legacy transcended his time in office. President Carter was a man of deep compassion, integrity, and service, whose life was a true testament to the best of humanity.
As the 39th President of the United States, President Carter led with humility, courage, and an unwavering commitment to peace and justice. His impact extended far beyond his presidency, with his post-presidential work solidifying him as one of the greatest humanitarians of our time. Through the Carter Center, he advocated for human rights, fought to eliminate diseases, and brought hope to communities around the globe. His dedication to improving the lives of others has created a lasting legacy that will inspire generations to come.
Many in our community remember the warm visit President Carter and his family made to St. Croix during the 2009 Christmas holidays. Their time here reflected the hospitality and spirit of the Virgin Islands, and we were honored to welcome them into our home. For those who had the privilege of meeting him, President Carter’s kindness and respect for others left an indelible mark on our hearts.
As we reflect on his extraordinary life and contributions to humanity, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and to all who were touched by his work. In his memory, let us continue to uphold the values of compassion, service, and justice that he exemplified so profoundly.
