St. Croix – Built on a foundation of great minds, glorious people, and devoted volunteers and employees, CMCArts (The Caribbean Museum for the Arts) has survived and thrived to become the main bastion for the arts on St. Croix. This venerable art museum and major hub for the arts and art education on the Big Island, has announced that it is expanding to St. Thomas and opening a second location in the heart of Charlotte Amalie sometime this year.
The expansion, through a partnership with Fifteenandnine LLC, marks a significant step in CMCArts mission to serve the Caribbean by spreading its grand purpose of providing arts education and the promotion of local artists and Crucian culture to all Virgin Islanders.
“With the support of generous benefactors, the new venue will extend existing CMCArts programming to St. Thomas, and will mirror the St. Croix museum store and exhibition gallery that proudly showcases the voice of the Virgin Islands, the Caribbean and the Diaspora,” said Lisa Mordhorst, Executive Director of CMCArts.
The expansion is certain to provide greater access to CMCArts ground-breaking exhibitions, deeply-admired educational initiatives, and widely-respected cultural programming.
The new location will be housed within Fifteenandnine’s historic redevelopment at 15 Dronningens Gade, a revitalized Main Street property in Charlotte Amalie that blends heritage architecture with modern retail and community-focused space. Designed to support local businesses, artists, and creative enterprises, the development is part of a broader effort to restore Charlotte Amalie’s historic district while strengthening its economic and cultural vitality.
Fifteenandnine’s redevelopment emphasizes locally driven retail, walkable community spaces, and opportunities for cultural exchange, making it an ideal partner for CMCArts’ continued growth and commitment to the creative economy of the Virgin Islands.
CMCArts mission is to inspire and promote the Caribbean’s rich cultural and artistic heritage through engaging its diverse communities. The expansion reflects a strategic and mission-aligned effort to increase accessibility and visibility for Virgin Islands and Caribbean artists, at the same time deepening community engagement across the Territory.
